The current consumer demand for high quality TV drama, driven by the hugely successful franchises of recent years, is creating a massive security problem for programme makers and distributors.
The threat begins during the production process and doesn’t really end until the programme is freely available on TV around the world, often some weeks later.
“We are delighted to have enjoyed a successful partnership with the BBC and its Dr Who franchise” said Mathew Gilliat Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Fortium Technologies, “and were proud to work with their team during the successful 50th anniversary broadcast. We have been working with them again during the current series, through the use of ‘MediaSeal file encryption at-rest’, to help prevent any leaks ahead of broadcast.”
For the pirates, being ahead of the game in making as- yet unreleased content widely available is the ultimate goal, and with the complexities surrounding regional and national broadcast rights, channel availability and TV broadcast schedules, the odds are often stacked against the good guys.
Sports content broadcast on TV is also under threat as pirate operators look to re-transmit events across other platforms and in other regions.
Fortium will be joining NAGRA, Adobe and Virgin Media in discussing the need for a broad based approach to content security at next week’s Content Protection Summit to be held in London on Weds 29th October.
In addition, speakers from Civolution and Cisco will address the specific topic of content redistribution, while Farncombe Technology, Fox International Channel Europe and, legal firm, Osborne Clarke will look at issues relating to cross border rights.
