Doctor Who 50th Anniversary – BBC Worldwide to discuss Supply Chain Challenges at HITS Europe

On 23rd November last year the BBC aired a special edition of Doctor Who to mark the 50th anniversary of the longest running sci-fi television series in the world. It became one of the greatest entertainment supply chain challenges ever undertaken.

Such is the global appeal of the series that the occasion was confirmed as a new Guinness World Record for the largest simulcast of a TV drama in history, watched by viewers in 98 countries worldwide.

While people in London tuned into the early evening broadcast viewers in LA were watching at midday, whereas fans in Sydney were watching at the crack of their Sunday morning’s dawn.

If that wasn’t enough, the programme was also screened in 3D in more than 1,500 cinemas around the globe including the UK and Ireland, Australia, Russia and Latin America, as well as Western Europe, USA and Canada.

A Global DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Download release followed a week later.

Finally, a live event celebration was hosted in London on the same weekend, attended by 23,000 fans.

The supply chain challenges of meeting so many release windows simultaneously were immense, and the planning and preparation that sat behind the project, was meticulous.

“The title needed to be localised into 15 languages and distributed in advance for the theatrical, TV and online audiences, so the logistical and security challenges alone were huge” said Robin Boldon, Director of Digital Distribution at BBC Worldwide. “That all of this was achieved without a single leak of the programme was a huge testament to everyone involved in the project” he added.

“We are delighted that BBC Worldwide and its supply chain partners have agreed to share details of this exciting project at the inaugural HITS Europe event” said Jim Bottoms, Executive Director of MESA Europe. “There is so much to learn from this huge cross platform challenge and we look forward to showcasing this at the London event.

HITS Europe, takes place in the Mayfair Hotel on Tuesday 25th March. In addition to BBC Worldwide, confirmed participants include senior executives from Warner Bros Home Entertainment and Walt Disney International.
